Yes, honorary Africanist that I was lucky enough to have been at least for a while way back in 1979, and remembering and reconstructing that time in my life the best I can here as I write this today, still such an admirer of the continent’s literature, I’ll defer to the magic of the true poet on that.

Wholeheartedly and without any question whatsoever.

—Antioch Review, 2018

Postscript: Recently, since this essay first appeared in a magazine, international news reported that what had been escalating in the past several years, tensions between the Anglophone and Francophone sectors of Cameroon, had finally led to a period of extreme violence. For me that meant a certain sadness to think again of the admirable progress there had once been in the country, which, when I visited in 1979, seemed a model of general success after independence, a working example for those throughout Africa who at the time aspired to true Pan-Africanism and eventual united goals on the continent despite ethnic or other cultural differences.
